Employing Diamond Foundry's first-of-its-kind single-crystal diamond wafer technology, we are pleased to announce today that our ASICs team has developed an advanced diamond-based packaging for high-power AI GPUs which, for the first time, effectively creates a hotspot-free microchip.
Hotspots limit semiconductor chips' speed: When microchips reach their maximum temperature, they slow down to ensure they don't overheat. By using our novel single-crystal diamond as a semiconductor substrate that replaces virtually all of a chip's passive silicon with the universe's most thermally conductive material, the resultant microchip prevents hotspots in the first place.
"Silicon wafers are a great means to produce today's most advanced chips, but keeping them as the substrate in the product is an error. With hotspot-free chips, we can now triple their speed."
